Scripture Reference;

“14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16 KJV

“1 And the famine was sore in the land.

2 And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.

3 And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:

5 But if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

6 And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?

7 And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?

8 And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.

9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:

10 For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.

11 And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:

12 And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight:

13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:

14 And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

15 And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.

16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.

17 And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph’s house.

18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.

19 And they came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they communed with him at the door of the house,

20 And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food:

21 And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand.

22 And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.

23 And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.

24 And the man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.

25 And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.

26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.

27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive?

28 And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance.

29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.

30 And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.

31 And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread.

32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.

33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another.

34 And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin’s mess was five times so much as any of their’s. And they drank, and were merry with him.” Genesis 43 KJV

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

“39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.

40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” Luke 22:39-44 KJV

In the study of the Bible we encounter persons, ceremonies, or events that foreshadow future persons, ceremonies, or events. They are referred to as “typical” or as “types”. Although Joseph was a real man, he is sometimes considered a type of Christ.

That is how I am viewing Joseph today. In both of the above accounts we see a depth of love that is passionate. We also see a “type” of salvation in them. Joseph loved his family so much that he devised a plan that would not only work reconciliation, but also save his family from the effects of the famine. God the Father loved the world so deeply that He sent his only Son, so that many would be saved from perishing eternally.

Transitions part 19: A New Song

April 1, 2014 at 7:26 am (abiding, About Sin, Assurance, Battling, chastisement, correction, Devotional Thoughts., Discernment, Faith, Forgiveness, Grace, Guidance, Hope, Life, Lighter Burdens., Love, Marriage, Mercy, Obedience, Our Unchanging God, Parenting, Patience, Peace, Praise, Prayer, refuge, Repentance, Resting, Restoration, Righteousness, Salvation, salvation plan, self-esteem, shelter, Sins, Sovereignty of God, strengthening, Suffering, Transformation., Transitions ( Where I am, where I have been...the happenings of my life), Trusting, Truth, value, When you are afraid, When you feel bitter, When You Feel Like Crying., Wisdom, worth)

All of my posts with “Transitions” in the title share a little about me and my family.

Scripture reference;

1 I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. Psalm 40:1-3 KJV

“1Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and theLord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53:1-6 KJV

“6 Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:

7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” Isaiah 55:6-7

“14 The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.

15 The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season.

16 Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.

17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.

18 The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

19 He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.” Psalm 145:14-19 KJV

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” 1John 1:1-10 KJV

It’s Tuesday morning, and I am thankful for a number of things.

I am thankful that my husband’s eye problems have been stable so far this year.

I am thankful that I have a husband to love.

I am thankful that I have children to love and that they are in good health.

I am thankful for loving friends who pray for me and my family, and who encourage me.

I am thankful that we are recovering from the financial difficulties we were having last year.

I am thankful that the Bible tells me that He will forgive me for my sins, and that He will guide me if I seek Him.

I am so thankful the Lord is full of compassion.

Each day I may grow older, but not a lot wiser. I face many problems, but I don’t have the solutions. However, I can say that I am more persuaded than ever that “Looking unto Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2) is the course that I must take, and walk in one day at a time. I know that the best thing for me to do is to call on the Lord, to confess my sins, and to trust that the Bible is true. It says He loves me and forgives me, and is willing to lead me and take care of me. I can pray for others, too. He cares about those things that trouble me. He knows about the issues that worry me the most.

Scripture reference;

“22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.”  Genesis 3:22-24 KJV

22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man has become like one of Us [the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit], to know [how to distinguish between] good and evil and blessing and calamity; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live[b]forever—

23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.

24 So [God] drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the Garden of Eden the[c]cherubim and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep and guard the way to the tree of life. Genesis 3:22-24 AMP

“17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.[d] 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.” James 1:17-18 ESV

“14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.” 1 John 4:14-17 KJV

” 1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalm 23 KJV

When I think of the words pursue and pursuit and all of their forms and synonyms I think in terms of “following in order to catch someone or something”. However, when I read Genesis 3:22-24 it dawned on me that sometimes we pursue people and things not just in order to catch them, but also in order to drive them or steer them away from something for their own good. The ones we are chasing might know that or they might not, but either way it is still the right and loving thing to do.  It saddens me that the Lord’s children forget that; and view His rod and staff as instruments of torture rather than tools of protection and comfort. I am so forgetful.

Adam and Eve had been given hope when God promised to send an offspring that would “bruise the serpent’s head”. He fulfilled that promise and gave the world hope by sending Jesus, His only Begotten Son. You can read more about that here:

 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

“I and my Father are one.” John 10:30

All of God’s works are loving and wherever we find love hope will be very near.

Can you think of a time the Lord did something that turned out to be for your own good when, at first, it seemed bad?

Please feel free to share it. I would love to hear about it.

 8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool[c] of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”[d] 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”14 The Lord God said to the serpent,“Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock    and above all beasts of the field;on your belly you shall go,    and dust you shall eat    all the days of your life.15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,    and between your offspring[e] and her offspring;he shall bruise your head,    and you shall bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:8-15 ESV

leaves-2671780_1920

It’s the story of Adam and Eve. It’s about the fall of man. Adam and Eve had sinned. Then they heard the sound of the Lord walking in the garden.

They recognized that sound.

I have often wondered how big God was there. Was it His footsteps they heard or the rustle of the trees as He moved among them? Was it the sound of his breathing when he paused? Did they feel the breeze as he passed by? Was it slow or swift?

Just think, “before a word was on ‘His’ tongue”……. they were aware of His approach…that the Lord was in their midst. How did they respond? They were afraid. They probably were afraid that it was time for them to die, since they didn’t die immediately when they first ate the forbidden fruit. They probably felt so stupid for initially believing the serpent’s words, and for eating that fruit.

Fear and regret, and the impulse to hide…I know what that is like.  They hid…… behind a tree? No. They hid among the trees. It sounds like they might have been on the move going from tree to tree. I wonder how long that went on?

What happened next? Let’s see:

 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

The Lord called out to them, and how did they respond? They answered Him. Adam confessed that he was afraid. Then the Lord questioned both the man and the woman. They each confessed what they had done, but tried to shift the blame a little. The Lord held each of them accountable, and there were consequences for not only them, but for all mankind.

But the Lord didn’t stop loving them…didn’t stop loving the human race. He had a plan. It was a plan of redemption……and the Lord shared that plan with them. I have decided to refer to that plan as “A Loving Pursuit”. ❤

“14 The Lord God said to the serpent,“Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field;on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.5 I will put enmity between you and the woman,    and between your offspring[e] and her offspring;    he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:14-15 ESV

Did they understand Him perfectly? No, but they were given some light (some knowledge) and they walked in that light.

In many ways our lives are a lot like the lives of Adam and Eve’s. The Lord is still much the same today, too.

To my readers:  Something went wrong when I was typing this post. The format and the font size became inconsistent. I tried to fix it using my limited skills and was unsuccessful. I apologize for that.

O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing

Scripture references;

“6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” 1Peter 5:6-7 KJV

15The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. Psalm 34:15 KJV

Abraham Justified by Faith

 1What then shall we say was gained by[a] Abraham,(A) our forefather according to the flesh? 2For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but(B) not before God. 3For what does the Scripture say?(C)“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” 4Now(D) to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. 5And to the one who does not work but(E) believes in[b] him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, 6just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
7(F) “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
and whose sins are covered;
8blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not(G) count his sin.” Romans 4:1-8 ESV

O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing by Charles Wesley

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life, and health, and peace.

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

He speaks, and, listening to His voice,
New life the dead receive,
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
The humble poor believe.

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind, behold your Savior come,
And leap, ye lame, for joy.

In Christ your Head, you then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.

Glory to God, and praise and love
Be ever, ever given,
By saints below and saints above,
The church in earth and heaven.

On this glad day the glorious Sun
Of Righteousness arose;
On my benighted soul He shone
And filled it with repose.

Sudden expired the legal strife,
’Twas then I ceased to grieve;
My second, real, living life
I then began to live.

Then with my heart I first believed,
Believed with faith divine,
Power with the Holy Ghost received
To call the Savior mine.

I felt my Lord’s atoning blood
Close to my soul applied;
Me, me He loved, the Son of God,
For me, for me He died!

I found and owned His promise true,
Ascertained of my part,
My pardon passed in heaven I knew
When written on my heart.

Look unto Him, ye nations, own
Your God, ye fallen race;
Look, and be saved through faith alone,
Be justified by grace.

See all your sins on Jesus laid:
The Lamb of God was slain,
His soul was once an offering made
For every soul of man.

Awake from guilty nature’s sleep,
And Christ shall give you light,
Cast all your sins into the deep,
And wash the Æthiop white.

Harlots and publicans and thieves
In holy triumph join!
Saved is the sinner that believes
From crimes as great as mine.

Murderers and all ye hellish crew
In holy triumph join!
Believe the Savior died for you;
For me the Savior died.

With me, your chief, ye then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.

Very Important Words About Salvation

March 15, 2011 at 11:05 pm (About Salvation: Very Important Words, About Sin, Assurance, Devotional Thoughts., Evangelism, Forgiveness, Healing, Lighter Burdens., Love, Peace, Prayer, Repentance, Restoration, Salvation, salvation plan, Sins, Sovereignty of God, Transformation., Trusting, When you are afraid, When You Feel Like Crying., Wisdom, Witnessing)

It is my hope that all who read my blog will understand and appreciate that we all come into the world with the following in common:

God Loves Us.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Romans 5:8

We All Are Sinners.

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.Romans 3:23

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.  Romans 3:10

God’s Remedy For Our Sin

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Romans 6:23

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.  John 1:12

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

All May Be Saved Now.

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him. Revelation 3:20(a)

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.  Romans 10:13

My Decision to Receive Christ As My Saviour; A Decision Each of Us Must Make for Ourselves

( something to pray )

“Lord Jesus, I believe that You are God, that You died for my sin, and that You rose again from the dead. I know that I am a sinner, and I ask You now to be my personal Saviour. I’m placing my full trust in You alone, and I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank you for keeping Your promise! Amen.”

If you have made this decision for Christ record the date somewhere; it is a date so precious that you will want to remember it.

We All Should Follow Jesus.

After making your decision to receive Christ, I would urge you to do two things.  First begin to seek the Lord in prayer and study of the Bible.  If you do not have a Bible click on this link:   www.biblegateway.com, and you can begin reading there.  Then seek a local church, congregation, or assembly (even a small group)…it might be in your town or even online (see my blogroll) that will assist you in growing as a new Christian by the clear teaching of the Bible. If this second step seems a little scary, then pray some more and tell Him about it. He loves you so, and will be so glad to guide you. He will not leave you…Would a good mother ignore the cries of her baby? No, she would do all that was in her power to care for that child. Well, the Lord loves his children even more, and His power has no bounds! So do not be afraid. The Lord is patient and understanding. Trust him.

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.  2Peter 3:18

Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion for the child of her womb? Even if these forget, yet I will not forget you.  Isaiah 49:15

Our Assurance As a Believer

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  Romans 10:9

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.  John 5:24

But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.  John 20:31

Psalm 40… The Lord Inclines: (Part 4: The Judgement Seat of Christ)

Scripture Reference;

I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.  He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.  And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.  Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.  Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.  Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.  Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.  I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me.Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.  Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified.But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.  Psalm 40 KJV

Today I am proceeding to verse 7 of Psalm 40.  Here it is below:

“Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,”

…What can I say about this? We all have a story, and the versions can vary depending on who is telling it. We read about people and events in history books, but we are often left wondering how accurate these accounts really are. But the book referred to by David was 100 percent accurate. The Lord makes no mistakes. This is not the only Psalm that mentions that our life is recorded in a book.  It is funny how something that I think can be simple can become complicated. There are many books in the Bible that mention David including one called  “The Lamb’s Book of Life”. I had wondered if that was the book to which he was referring.  I have heard preachers over the years mention this book. It contains the names of all the people throughout all the ages that have known the Lord as their personal Savior. I had always thought that it was just a list of names,  and like the chorus to that popular old hymn says, “When The Roll is Called Up Yonder I’ll be there.”, but when David speaks he makes it sound like there is more to it than that.

Last Sunday I was in church and the pastor was preaching about the role a parent has in a child’s life, and that it is very important that one should strive to bring their child up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. He explained how parents should teach and model for their children what it means to live a Christian life. While he was preaching he quoted a couple Bible verses that convicted me and made me worry a  little, because I was not sure how to interpret them. I have been to many different types of churches in my life, and some of them interpreted scripture in a way that caused me to have a “type” of fear that I now believe the Lord does not desire  His children to have. The verse has to do with what many Christians refer to as “The Judgment Seat of Christ”. Here are the verses below.

“36But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:36-37 NIV

I became concerned about the whole subject of “The Judgment Seat of Christ”and wrote to him about it. He wrote me back and I was so comforted by his reply that I decided to share this correspondence with you.  Here it is below:

Howard,

I believe the Lord has laid a few things on my heart today (with your help) that have been of great comfort and encouragement to me. One of the things that was on my mind was “The Judgment Seat of Christ”, the “day” of judgment. This came to my mind when you mentioned the verses in Matthew below. I am sure that when it comes to this subject you probably know a lot more than I do, and there is probably a whole lot of scripture that speaks about it. However, I wanted to look at that passage from Matthew as well as another passage. Here they are :

“36But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:36-37 NIV ”

6Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7We live by faith, not by sight. 8We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.11Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. ” 2 Corinthians 5:6-11 NIV

You might find it interesting that prior to 1999 I had been under the teachings of various churches that all taught that a person’s salvation was not always permanent. These people seldom spoke about “the judgment seat of Christ”. They didn’t seem to believe in the idea of receiving rewards. They usually spoke of “the great white judgment” that was for the unsaved, and that was the only type of judgment they really seemed to think about. Then I came to believe that salvation is always permanent, and not long after that we joined a type of Baptist church simply because we did not know that there were other denominations beside Baptists that believed that saved people always stay saved. I know I have already told you about our history of church experiences, and I will now try to get to my point. The pastor of that particular church believed that it was of utmost importance  that we never forget that believers would definitely appear before “The Judgment Seat of Christ” and he would warn us continually that we should be very concerned about that. I am sure you know me well enough by now to know that as a result I went from being very afraid of losing my salvation to being afraid of getting a rebuke instead of a reward at the Judgment Seat of Christ”, as well as bouts of fear that my sins proved that I might have failed to put my faith in Christ in the first place ( I still battle that one some.) We all had two verses memorized.  Here they are :

“11Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.” 2 Corinthians 5:11 KJV, and “7Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Galatians 6:7 KJV

Well, I had an experience one night that affected some of my thinking on this subject. I hope you will not consider what I am about to say as heresy. The first thing I want to say is that the verses I have mentioned so far in this letter clearly teach that there will be a day when our life here on the earth is over when we will certainly appear before that judgment seat, so please don’t think that I am rejecting that truth. One night while I prayed silently before going to sleep I was feeling afraid of facing the Lord on that day of judgment, and I said something to the Lord that might be a little humorous, but I really was sincere. I said “Lord, I’m scared…I’m scared to face you that day.” I was talking to Him as if he were two different people (one to whom I could run to for comfort whenever the need arose and one to run away from, one who I was so afraid of finally facing on that day ). Then something happened that does not happen to me very often.  Right after I made that statement to the Lord a thought surfaced in my mind. It said  “You just were.” Then I remembered the verses below.

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.  2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. 5 You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. 7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, [a] you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” 12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.  Psalm 139:1-12 NIV

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17NIV

It occurred to me that all of the attributes that I find in my Savior that are so comforting will still be there when I face Him on the day of judgment after I die.  The next thing that occurred to me was that Jesus is on the throne:   “21To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.” Revelation 3:21NIV.  Therefore when the Holy Spirit convicts me of my sin, and I feel that anguish and go to Him in prayer I have in a sense been to the Judgment Seat of Christ, and perhaps in a moment in time have been both condemned and acquitted, but I still really am not sure how to interpret this verse:

“37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:37 NIV.

But I do know that the Bible teaches that if we confess our sins He is just and able to forgive us, and all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. The reason I have a hard time understanding the meaning of Matthew 12:36-37, and all of the other passages I mentioned about the Judgment Seat of Christ is because there are also verses in the Bible that say this:

“17 Surely it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. In your love you kept me from the pit of destruction; you have put all my sins behind your back.”  Isaiah 38:17  NIV

“10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.  11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us . 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;” Psalm 103:10-13 NIV

3If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?4But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. Psalm 130:3-4KJV

For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.  Hebrews 8:12 NIV

I know the passages at the top of this letter about the Judgment Seat of Christ are true, but I don’t understand how sins that have been taken away, that are behind God’s back, if the Lord doesn’t mark our iniquities,…then how will these sins suddenly be there again for the Lord to view?  I find that thought so disturbing. If you can help me with this I would appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Theresa

Theresa;
There is much to be said about the judgement seat of Christ and the “publication” of our sin.   Indeed it seems counterintuitive that sins would be separated from us as far as east is from west and that as Micah says, our transgressions would be cast into the depths of the sea, beyond remembrance and yet appear to testify against us on what will be one of the most glorious days of our existence.
Yet it must be noted that when God separates us from our sin and places them beyond remembrance, this primarily indicates that we experience release from the judicial consquences of our sin — in other words, our sins are not “counted against” us because they were reckoned upon Christ on the cross.    I like John Bunyan’s perspective best on the publication of our sin at the judgement seat of Christ — that it is not so much a publication of our sins which causes personal sorrow for us, but a publication of the glories of our Savior who bore every one and thus causes us to praise Christ.
At the judgement seat of Christ our focus will not be on our failings, but on Christ’s successes!   I sorrow over my sin every day.   It grieves me and there is a sense which I long to be with Christ so that I will sin no more.   Yet on the day when I stand before Christ, I stand there by grace alone.   Not by my ability to do what is right or to restrain what was wrong.   For I am a sinful creature without hope except by God’s grace.    When I stand before Christ, I stand in His grace.   I will not feebly try to explain my sin, but I will praise my savior for the depth of his love which, only then will be fully revealed to me.   There is a sense in which I experience this every week in worship — when I realize that I stand before Him, my sin is always before me, but then He reminds me that in grace I am invited to come boldly into his presence because I do not come alone without a mediator, intercessor, and surety.
Beloved, Theresa, do not fear that judgment if you trust in Christ’s mercy and flee to Him.   For on that day, your account will be read and after every transgression will be shouted, “paid in full.”   The Lord Jesus Christ will not look upon you with disdain and sorrow, but with the tender love of a husband for his beloved bride.
Those who stand before Christ without the covering of his grace will have nothing to say and no recourse to their works, for those works will only condemn them.   Those who simply trust in Christ in acknowledgment of their complete inability to rid themselves of their sin or the guilt of it and who rest upon Him will receive the reward for the gracious deeds that He has worked in us through the Holy Spirit ( Phil 2:13 )
We must constantly remember that the judgment seat of Christ is about Christ and not primarily about us.
Those who trust in their works and on their religious works are admonished time and time again in the OT prophets, “woe to you who long for the Day of the Lord.”   But for those who place no confidence in the flesh but flee to Christ’s mercy in grace we long for the “blessed hope, the glorious appearing of our Savior.”  Titus 2:11-13  The gospel is good news because it is utterly gracious.   Hebrews 7:25 is one of my favorite verses of Scripture because it reminds me that even in the midst of my continued war between the flesh and the Spirit, that Jesus is interceding for me for every transgression and will save me to the uttermost.
Let us long for the glorious appearing of our King especially since His glory is revealed in the publication of His grace through the publication of my sins.    And let me say this, on that day you will not hear my sins and say, “oh my, how could he have thought, said, done such a thing — after all he is a pastor.”   What you will say, is “glory to the Lamb who sits in the midst of the throne, for he has purchased, by his own blood, men from every tribe and nation and language and people.   Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of His Father!”   Praise Jesus who, “while we are yet sinning, died for us.”
Theresa, what good news is such a gospel!   When I think of it, Paul’s words in Romans 7:25-8:1 come to my mind!    What a glorious savior to shed his own blood for such sinners as I!   How glorious it will be when the depth of our savior’s love is revealed on that day because it will be made clear how great was our sin and how great is our Savior!    How can we not love such a Savior with all that we are!    Let your thoughts of that day of that judgment seat of Christ fan into flame your love for Christ and not your fear of Him.   It will not be a day of your shame but of His glory for those who trust in Him.
Now may the Lord of peace, Himself, give you peace at all times and in every way.   The Lord be with you.
In Christ,
Howard

For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.  Hebrews 8:12 NIV

24For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

25But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

26Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

27And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

29For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

30Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

31What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

33Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.

34Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:24-39 KJV

16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16 KJV

“8But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

12For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:8-13 KJV

The Old Account Was Settled by Frank M. Graham

There was a time on earth, when in the book of Heav’n
An old account was standing for sins yet unforgiv’n;
My name was at the top, and many things below,
I went unto the Keeper, and settled long ago.

Refrain

Long ago (down on my knees), long ago (I settled it all),
Yes, the old account was settled long ago (Hallelujah!);
And the record’s clear today, for He washed my sins away,
When the old account was settled long ago.

The old account was large, and growing every day,
For I was always sinning, and never tried to pay;
But when I looked ahead, and saw such pain and woe,
I said that I would settle, I settled long ago.

Refrain

When in that happy home, my Savior’s home above,
I’ll sing redemption’s story, and praise Him for His love;
I’ll not forget that book, with pages white as snow,
Because I came and settled, and settled long ago.

Refrain

O sinner, trust the Lord, be cleansed of all your sin,
For thus He hath provided for you to enter in;
And then if you should live a hundred years below,
Up there you’ll not regret it, you settled long ago.

Refrain
