Scripture reference;
“A merry heart does good, like medicine,
But a broken spirit dries the bones.” Proverbs 17:22 KJV
Today was a challenging day for me at my job. Actually the whole week has been like that.
Don’t get me wrong. I love my job.
I work with an elderly lady who also has developmental disabilities in an assisted living situation. This week she has been adjusting to some changes that were made to her plan of care, and it has been hard on her emotionally. I have also been given some new tasks that I must complete, and also more paperwork.
Change is hard.
Not long after arriving at her apartment I was sitting at her kitchen table folding some laundry, and feeling a little overwhelmed and heavyhearted about life in general.
Then there was a knock at the door. I answered, “Come in”.
The door opened, and in walked the bug man with his little sprayer in his hand. He appeared to be in his late sixties, and had this warm smile that seemed to convey that he truly enjoyed his job and that life was good. He asked if we had any bugs and then quickly made his way through the apartment squirting the baseboards.
On his way out he glanced at my little lady who was laying cozy on the sofa under a blanket, then back at me, and made a kind remark about her. I nodded and said, “She’s a little sweet pea”. I couldn’t help but smile, too as I considered her.
The whole experience took place in less than 5 minutes, but it was a healing experience for me. The effect wasn’t permanent, but it carried me for awhile. It reminded me of the potential that lies within us to lessen the pain of others.
