9 And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?

10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.

11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;

12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13 And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

15 And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16 And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

 Genesis 4:8-17 is a passage of scripture that is full of mysteries. An awful lot of questions came to my mind as I studied it. Probably the first question was this:  “If Cain was a vagabond how did he build a city?” Someone, might answer that he actually didn’t end up as a vagabond, or that he didn’t actually build a city.  Personally, I believe the Bible is true, so those two answers just won’t work for me. I just accept that there is some information that has been withheld for some reason, so I’m not going to press the matter.

A lot of people ask if Cain married his sister, and for some reason that one doesn’t bother me much, because of the fact that this is way back in Genesis.  There were so many things that were  different from the way they are now like lifespans for instance.

Of all the questions I have about Cain the one I find the most serious is this:  “Did God continue to Love Cain after He killed Abel?”  From what I read in Genesis 4:15 it sounds like He did. Some people might think Cain got off too easy, and I don’t know how old Cain was when he died, but Seth lived 912 years, so Cain probably lived to be pretty old. The Amplified Bible described his quality of life like this:

“12 When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength; you shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth [in perpetual exile, a degraded outcast].” Genesis 4:12 AMP

Some people might think Cain’s punishment was too lenient, and some might think it was too harsh. I believe the Lord knows what is best, and I see the Lord’s loving pursuit here, too.
