Scripture Reference;

Psalm 103

 1Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

 2Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

 3Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

 4Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

 5Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

 6The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.

 7He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.

 8The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

 9He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.

 10He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

 11For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

 12As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

 13Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.

 14For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

 15As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.

 16For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

 17But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;

 18To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

 19The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.

 20Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

 21Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

 22Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.

Here is the verse I am considering today:

“As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”  Psalm 103:12

I have a couple of bad habits. The first one is that I have this habit of rating my sins. I also have a habit of telling the Lord over and over that I am sorry for sins from which I have already confessed and turned.  Some of them were committed months, years, and even decades ago, and if they happen to be sins with certain “ratings” I cringe, and really have to quote scripture passages to myself which prove that the Lord has forgiven them…which prove that they are no longer visible to Him.

Do any of you do that?

It makes me so miserable whenever I do that.

I wrote a blog post a long time ago that speaks on this subject. I think I will go read it again. Here is a link to it:

Here is another blog post that speaks on this subject:

https://pronetoponder.wordpress.com/2010/06/22/groanings-part-5d-the-lord-inclines/

Would a song help? I think I will include this song. Most hymnals include only a few verses, but cyberhymnal had them all. Here are some of them:

“O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing” by Charles Wesley

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life, and health, and peace.

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

He speaks, and, listening to His voice,
New life the dead receive,
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
The humble poor believe.

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind, behold your Savior come,
And leap, ye lame, for joy.

In Christ your Head, you then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.

Glory to God, and praise and love
Be ever, ever given,
By saints below and saints above,
The church in earth and heaven.

On this glad day the glorious Sun
Of Righteousness arose;
On my benighted soul He shone
And filled it with repose.

Sudden expired the legal strife,
’Twas then I ceased to grieve;
My second, real, living life
I then began to live.

Then with my heart I first believed,
Believed with faith divine,
Power with the Holy Ghost received
To call the Savior mine.

I felt my Lord’s atoning blood
Close to my soul applied;
Me, me He loved, the Son of God,
For me, for me He died!

I found and owned His promise true,
Ascertained of my part,
My pardon passed in heaven I knew
When written on my heart.

Look unto Him, ye nations, own
Your God, ye fallen race;
Look, and be saved through faith alone,
Be justified by grace.

See all your sins on Jesus laid:
The Lamb of God was slain,
His soul was once an offering made
For every soul of man.

Here are the two verses I am considering today:

“ 10He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

 11For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.”

Let’s look at verse 10. I noticed that it mentions both sins and iniquities. My first thought would be that they are synonyms for the same thing, but the fact that both are mentioned must mean that there is at least a subtle difference.

Have you ever thought about all of the categories of sin that are mentioned in the Bible? There are a lot. Sins, trespasses, transgressions, and iniquities would be some entry words a person might use if they wanted to do a study on the topic of sin. Then there are subtopics; all of those adjectives like besetting sins, sins of omission (those good deeds that we never get around to doing like giving to the poor or visiting the sick) the sin unto death, past sins, future sins, and so on. I have no intention of “going there”. There are great theologians (both past and present) who have written books, and I appreciate that.  But my blog is just a simple blog. Just typing that list of words overwhelmed me, and almost made me cry. It’s convicting.

When I first read verse 10 and 11 of Psalm 103 I thought of Isaiah 55:6-9

“6 Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:

7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

In verse 7 we once again have two classifications:  the wicked and the unrighteous. Once again, since they both are mentioned it means that each type of these people are in some respect different (it seems wicked would be worse), yet they are both in danger, and in need. One needs mercy and the other needs pardon, or maybe each of them needs mercy and pardon. The point I’m trying to make is that the Lord invites both of them to receive what they need.  “Abundantly” is a beautiful word. The Lord lavishes us with mercy and pardon.  I think about that a lot. If our ways have become wicked we are invited to abandon them and follow the Lord. If our thinking patterns have become unrighteous we can return to the Lord in prayer and have our minds renewed. I have to do this every day. The flesh (human nature) has a mind of its own, but if we are Christians we also have the Holy Spirit to convict us and to guide us. I love these verses:

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:1-2

At first glance some people might feel afraid and overwhelmed, but there is good news if you look at them again. First of all we wouldn’t be requested to do that in the first place if it were impossible. The Lord tells us in so many passages of the Bible that all we must do is desire those things. We desire, and then we call upon the Lord and ask him for them. We tell Him that are bodies haven’t been living sacrifices and that we are sorry. We tell Him that we haven’t been holy and acceptable, and that we are sorry. Then we ask Him to forgive us and to change us. Christians have to do this every day, because every day we fall short of the glory of God. The Lord will always be glad when we call on Him like that.

Now lets look at Psalm 103:11 along with Isaiah 55:9:

“ 11For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.”

“9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

It is difficult for us to fathom just how great the Lord’s mercy is. Some people might think that we would be able to approach the Lord like this just one time, because maybe we didn’t know any better when we were so unrighteous and wicked, but surely not repeatedly. That is because we think in human terms; according to how we might extend mercy and pardon. But we aren’t talking about people’s capacity. We are talking about God’s capacity. Check it out. The patriarchs and the prophets of the Old Testament, and Jesus’s disciples in the New Testament—whenever they had a special encounter or vision their first reaction was to be aware of their sin and to be afraid. There were even times when it said they were “sore afraid”.  Look at this:

“1 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.

2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.

6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:

7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.” Isaiah 6:1-7

A few weeks ago I came across this series, and felt lead to re-post it. Then I realized that it was incomplete.

I started this series back in 2011. That was an exciting year. I was ending one career, and beginning a new career. I was a veteran homeschooling mother. My oldest child had just finished graduate school, and had begun a career of his own. Both my daughter and I had been accepted for admission for full time enrollment at the university here in our town. My husband was still working at a restaurant where he had begun working in 1997. He had also returned to college in 2010. We were all so proud of him, because he was (and still is) legally blind.

380387_2387911628658_2006922409_n

We weren’t the perfect family. We had our own problems like many families do, but at that time I was feeling more confident than I had ever felt in my entire life. I was doing well for the first year or so, but then a number of hardships came.

386232_2120770230290_995175734_n

My husband’s glaucoma worsened bringing eye pain and vision loss. As a result, he broke his foot while on campus, because he misjudged a step. He withdrew from college in 2012. Then he took his first medical leave of absence from his job in 2013, and finally had to quit in 2014.

I ended up withdrawing from college shortly after midterm in the spring of 2013. I remember that I had made good grades, but the stress of it all was just too much for me. By then our daughter had spread her wings and had moved into her first apartment with a college friend a few months earlier.

There were also other problems that came along.

Our income had dropped by about 60%, but our bills hadn’t. We had only about nine years until our mortgage would have been paid off, but they foreclosed. We got a letter informing us that our house was going to be sold at auction, and I was starting to cringe whenever anyone knocked on our front door, fearing that it might be the sheriff telling us it was time to leave the premises. I had sent a prayer request to a handful of facebook friends. One Sunday afternoon our phone rang, and one of my childhood friends who happened to live in another state was on the other end. She told us that the Lord had lead them to purchase our mortgage, and that we could begin making house payments to them whenever we were able! The Lord is so merciful.

There were other heartbreaking experiences that came in 2014, and restoration is still pending. These were also things that broke the Lord’s heart.

All four of us had lead pretty sheltered lives from 1987 until around 2010 I guess. My husband worked outside the home. I worked inside the home. Our socialization beyond that was basically in church, and in our Christian homeschooling community. I knew there would be numerous temptations for the kids to compromise once they entered college. What I hadn’t counted on was that I would be tempted the same way, as I endeavored to remain bonded to my children in this new setting…

I stumbled in a number of ways. To put it in plain words, I sinned. What a tight rope I walked for so long. I should have been more steadfast. I ended up suffering loss anyway. What I had been afraid might happen did happen, and even worse.

So here I am. I still have my home, and I have been working steady at a rewarding part-time job for almost a year. I hope it might become full-time some day, but combined with my husband’s disability income we are keeping food on the table. My husband’s eye has his good days and bad days where pain is concerned. He has to use a cane now to get around in town, and runs into doors and door jams here at home, but he stays in pretty good spirits much of the time.

I never got that degree, and I won’t be getting any awards for woman of the year. I am just a simple woman living in her little house here in Arkansas, still sinning a little each day, confessing those sins and attempting to turn from them a lot each day, still praying, and still trusting the Lord with the measure of faith I have been given.

” 10He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

 11For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.” Psalm 103: 10-11 KJV

You know what? I don’t think I am going to try to explore those verses here today. I have been exploring them for nearly my entire life, and if you are a Christian you have been, too.

Love and Blessings,

Theresa
