Scripture references;
“12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, marked off the heavens with a [nine-inch] span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?
13 Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, or as His counselor has taught Him?
14 With whom did He take counsel, that instruction might be given Him? Who taught Him the path of justice and taught Him knowledge and showed Him the way of understanding?” Isaiah 40:12-14 AMP
“33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?
35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?
36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. Romans 11:33-36 KJV“
“4 But God—so rich is He in His mercy! Because of and in order to satisfy the great andwonderful and intense love with which He loved us,
5 Even when we were dead (slain) by [our own] shortcomings and trespasses, He made us alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ; [He gave us the very life of Christ Himself, the same new life with which He quickened Him, for] it is by grace (His favor and mercy which you did not deserve) that you are saved ([a]delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation).
6 And He raised us up together with Him and made us sit down together [giving us [b]joint seating with Him] in the heavenly sphere [by virtue of our being] in Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One).
7 He did this that He might clearly demonstrate through the ages to come the immeasurable (limitless, surpassing) riches of His free grace (His unmerited favor) in [His] kindness andgoodness of heart toward us in Christ Jesus.
8 For it is by free grace (God’s unmerited favor) that you are saved ([c]delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God;” Ephesians 2:4-8 AMP
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2 KJV
“8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
9 And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?
10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.
11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;
12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
13 And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
15 And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
16 And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.” Genesis 4:8-17 KJV
Genesis 4:8-17 is a passage of scripture that is full of mysteries. An awful lot of questions came to my mind as I studied it. Probably the first question was this: “If Cain was a vagabond how did he build a city?” Someone, might answer that he actually didn’t end up as a vagabond, or that he didn’t actually build a city. Personally, I believe the Bible is true, so those two answers just won’t work for me. I just accept that there is some information that has been withheld for some reason, so I’m not going to press the matter.
A lot of people ask if Cain married his sister, and for some reason that one doesn’t bother me much, because of the fact that this is way back in Genesis. There were so many things that were different from the way they are now like lifespans for instance.
Of all the questions I have about Cain the one I find the most serious is this: “Did God continue to Love Cain after He killed Abel?” From what I read in Genesis 4:15 it sounds like He did. Some people might think Cain got off too easy, and I don’t know how old Cain was when he died, but Seth lived 912 years, so Cain probably lived to be pretty old. The Amplified Bible described his quality of life like this:
“12 When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength; you shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth [in perpetual exile, a degraded outcast].” Genesis 4:12 AMP
Some people might think Cain’s punishment was too lenient, and some might think it was too harsh. I believe the Lord knows what is best, and I see the Lord’s loving pursuit here, too.

Thank you so much for this series, Theresa! And how you found a loving pursuit in this story too, blesses and comforts me. InThe Hiding Place, Corrie ten Boom asks her father about a word she’d heard at school, but didn’t know the meaning of. Her father had a heavy case of watches and parts and tools, and asked her to pick it up. It was too heavy and she couldn’t. He then told her that just as he must carry this case, for it was too heavy for her to carry, that also our Heavenly Father carries things for us that are too heavy for us to bear , until we can. I think about this story when there are things that I don’t understand.
Love and prayers!
