Church Specials… Songs I Have Written (Part Five… New Words to a couple “Oldies”)

This is the last blog entry I have devoted to songs that I solely have written. This time however, I took two very popular songs and changed the words.

I will first post the lyrics to the original version, and then put up the lyrics to mine.

I Can See Clearly Now

by  Johnny Nash

I can see clearly now the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me down
It’s gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
It’s gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day

Oh yes I can make it now the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is that rainbow I’ve been praying for
It’s gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day

Look all around there’s nothing but blue skies
Look straight ahead there’s nothing but blue skies

I can see clearly now the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Here is that rainbow I’ve been praying for
It’s gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
It’s gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
Bri-ri-ri-ri-right
Bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
Oh yeah
It’s gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
It’s gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
It’s gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day.

I Can See Clearly Now; My Sin is Gone

I can see clearly now my sin is gone;
All my transgressions cast in the deepest sea.
Gone are the doubts and fears that blind and bind.
It’s gonna be a bright bright sun-shiny day.

All of my life I’d heard that Jesus died
In order to pay for everyone of my sins,
But I never understood how rich He was,
Nor how His love, sweet love, had no end.

(bridge)

Then one day I finally came to see.
The Son had set me
Free..in deed………..

I can see clearly now my sin is gone;
All my transgressions cast in the deepest sea.
Gone are the doubts and fears that blind and bind.

Stairway To Heaven

by Led Zeppelin

There’s a lady who’s sure
All that glitters is gold
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven

When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven

There’s a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
‘Cause you know sometimes words have
Two meanings

In a tree by the brook
There’s a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are
Misgiven

Ooh, it makes me wonder

Ooh, it makes me wonder

There’s a feeling I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying
For leaving

In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those
Who stand looking

Ooh, it makes me wonder

Ooh, it really makes me wonder

And it’s whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason

And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will
Echo with laughter

Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, ooh, whoa, oh

If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow
Don’t be alarmed now
It’s just a spring clean
For the May queen

Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There’s still time to change
The road you’re on

And it makes me wonder

Aw, uh, oh

Your head is humming and it won’t go
In case you don’t know
The piper’s calling you to join him

Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?

(Solo)

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The truth will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll

And she’s buying a stairway
To heaven…

Here below is the one I wrote  in response to “Stairway To Heaven” (The stanza where I wrote ” In my heart I’m secure though my eyes might obscure” is in reference to the fact that Christians walk by faith and not by sight as described in Hebrews chapter 11.):

Stairway To Ponder

by Theresa Moore

There’s a lady who’s sure
There are things to behold
And she’s climbing a stairway…to ponder

When she gets there she knows
All the doors might be closed
But They’ll open if she turns their handles

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
And she’s climbing a stairway…to ponder

So many books line the walls
But she wants to be sure
Cause you can’t judge a book
By its cover

Through the window she looks
At a sky so serene
And it promises life here
Is fleeting

Ooh, I stand in wonder
Ooh, I stand in wonder

There’s a feeling I get
When I look to the sky
For I know that my Lord
Is returning

In my heart I’m secure
though my eyes might obscure
For He’s promised to lead those
Who seek Him

Ooh, I stand in wonder

Ooh, I really stand in wonder

And although we have sin
If we call out to Him
We will all receive life everlasting

And The Day Star will Shine
And we’ll no longer pine
And in Heaven there
Will be rejoicing

Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, ooh, whoa, oh

To every thing there is a season
A time and season
To every purpose
Under Heaven

Yes, there are two paths you can go by
Don’t take the wrong one
Now’s the time to change
The road you’re on

Does it makes you wonder?

Aw, uh, oh

His voice is calling; and His word shows
In case you don’t know
Jesus died so He could save you

Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?
And did you know
Your stairway leads to a decision?

(Solo)
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There stands a Saviour we can know
He is “The Light” and wants to show
That there are streets all paved with gold
And if you listen very hard
The truth will come to you at last
That Christ’s The Way, The Truth, The Life
He is The Rock, The Lord of Hosts
And she’s climbing a stairway
To ponder…

I like the concept of redeeming the worlds lyrics for Godly purposes, though I personally have not written lyrics to be sung. Well done. Keep writing and may God honor your desires to please Him.

Thank you. I remember a famous Poem titled “Invictus”, and how there was another poem that Christians like to recite in response to it. That is kind of what I was attempting with “Stairway To Ponder”. It was supposed to challenge the false statements in “Stairway To Heaven” with true statements.

These are really good! You did a great job. I remember doing something similar, but just in my head, right after I’d accepted Jesus. I’d be with my hubby and he’d be listening to the music like we always did. So I would sing it differently in my head. 🙂 so thankful for you and your witness and ways to glorify Him! deb

Your comment really touched me…it’s hard to explain. I’m just not good at short explanations. I would love to hear more about that sometime. Thank you for your kind words.
You know, there are times when I am less faithful in my walk than at other times, but even on my very best day I still fall so short of the Glory of God. That used to just torment me until I came to understand Romans 7 and 8. It helped me when I came to the understanding that all Christians have a dual nature (Flesh and Spirit) and will sin everyday. I know that if we will yield to the Spirit’s influence we will become more victorious and we should never abuse the grace of the Lord and adapt an attitude where we think we should cease from striving against sin, but I am so thankful for the Lord’s grace and mercy.

I have read your comments on other people’s blogs and my heart has been touched. For some reason you come across as being young; then it dawned on me that it is your meekness and humility that makes you seem that way. Jesus said that we are to humble ourselves as a little child. Humility is a quality that we tend to lose with age, but the Lord can restore a humble spirit that has been lost.

It convicts and encourages me when the Lord’s witness can be seen in people. Thank you, Debbie.

Okay, now your comment to my comment has me in tears. I feel “childish” at times, and am not sure that’s a good thing. I would want to be wise and knowledgeable, but. .. ha! But the way you put it makes me not feel so bad. I couldn’t change it anyway. It’s something that He gave me. love you! deb

I just got on one last time before I go to bed in a few minutes. Please do not misunderstand me. I never meant that you were childish, unwise, or lacking in knowledge, but the opposite…just very meek and humble which proves that you are mature, wise, and full of knowledge. You are just a very sweet person and it convicted me. I hope you get a good night’s sleep.

    Love, Theresa

Oh sweet one . . .I didn’t think you were saying anything bad. I knew you were blessing me. The enemy tries to point out how child-like I am, in a bad way, but you just stood up to him and showed where it is useful in the body that I am this way. 🙂 I admire your knowledge of His word and your strong faith in Jesus! Be blessed! You are doing a wonderful work for Him! deb

I love these! “I can see clearly now, my sin is gone”! That one is going to stick with me for a while. What a great truth and what a great way to magnify the Lord! God bless you!

“I Can See Clearly Now” is a very old song. They used to play it on the radio, and it came out in 1972. I would have been 5 years old at the time. I had to look the song up on Google to see who sang it.

Stairway to Heaven was a big rock hit when I was a kid, but I was never really a fan of Led Zeppelin. About a year ago I joined an art appreciation group that would pick a theme each month and the members could make a drawing or photograph or poem or song. I think they recently decided to quit. Well, back in January they chose “Stairway To Heaven”. So I sat down for a couple hours and attempted to come up with a Christian version of the song, and that is how I came up with the song above in my post. 🙂

I am so glad that we can see clearly now, too! The Lord is good. 🙂
